Aunque musicalmente probablemente no aporten demasiado, históricamente este grupo representa y son los pioneros del modelo comercial musical que se estableció en el final del siglo XX y que derivó en productos como el de Operación Triunfo, así como de grupos prefabricados como Take That o Spice Girls.
La fórmula es: pon un anuncio en el periódico pidiendo adolescentes bailarines y cantarines. Haces un casting: el guapo, el aniñado, el sensible, el duro y el macarrilla... los expertos hacen milagros. Les vistes de payasetes y les pones pendientes, piercings, tatuajes o lo que sea. En los 80 para un hombre usar pendiente era un símbolo de rebeldía muy poco usual (y también de ser gay, aunque no necesariamente). Luego era tan fácil como recoger el dinero de la venta de discos y de aguantar a miles de niñas histéricas en conciertos por todo el mundo. Hasta te podrían hacer una serie de dibujos animados para competir con "Gi-Joe".
Pues eso: New Kids on the Block fueron los primeros.
